The deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor catapulted the issue of police violence to the forefront of the media and collective consciousness. But as public defenders, we know well that police violence has long been a fixture of our clients’ encounters with the criminal legal system; from false arrest to excessive force, and even death – our clients live under the constant threat and fear of dangerous police interactions. What is the role of the public defender in addressing the violence we bear witness to through our clients and demanding police accountability? This session aims to address that question and discuss the model for incorporating police accountability into a holistic defense office that has proven successful at Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem.
