A shift toward “self-care culture” in recent years has brought self-care practices to the forefront of public consciousness. While most people understand the fundamental practices for care for oneself effectively (healthy diet, exercise, sleep, etc.), for those working in adversarial or trauma-heavy environments such as Public Defenders Offices, the practice of self-care is a bit more complex.

This presentation will begin by identifying relevant terminology (trauma, empathy, compassion fatigue, burnout, resiliency) related to this topic. We will then identify warning signs of secondary trauma or burnout and how to identify when you/your colleagues may be struggling. We offer examples of practical and holistic coping strategies that can be utilized within daily practice and that are specific to individuals working in Public Defenders offices. We also offer resources to assist participants in supporting health, wellness, and mental health on a broader level. Our presentation includes personal experiences/stories and it is bolstered by evidence-based research and practices.
