This session will challenge defenders to grapple with what it means to work for and with individuals they represent and communities directly impacted by legal systems as partners in advocacy outside of court in the broader community for justice. This session will include a discussion among community organizers, as well as a case study in Prince George’s County, MD where public defenders, community organizers, and artists banded together to create a local and national media advocacy campaign for accountability and decarceration during COVID.
