COVID 19 exposed and exacerbated racial injustices that have plagued American society for generations. This has been especially true in the criminal legal system, particularly for those who are incarcerated. Through creative and innovative litigation, legislative, policy, and organizing strategies, the ACLU of New Jersey and it's partners, including directly impacted families, worked to secure the release of over 3,000 people from prison and jails in New Jersey, significantly reducing the state's incarcerated population. As New Jersey has one of the worst racial disparities in its prisons in the country, this was a significant racial justice issue. This panel will share strategies and brainstorm ways in which we can build on the success of these releases to make sure our prison population does not rise again.
